Chef Georgio would also like you to know that the dietetic information provided on these web pages is for educational purposes only. It is not designed to provide medical advice. You should consult your health care provider regarding any dietary or medical issues you have relating to symptoms, conditions, diseases, diagnosis, treatments and side-effects.

The following calculators are provided to assist you in determining such educational data as your Body Mass Index, Body Fat Percentage and Basal Metabolism Rate.

All of these guides are designed to assist you in whatever dietary regimen you have decided to follow. Hopefully on the advice of your health care provider.

BODY MASS INDEX

Your Height:
Obesity guidelines propose that doctors use body mass index (BMI) to assess patients because the index is simple, correlates to fatness, and applies to both men and women. To determine BMI, weight in kilograms is divided by height in meters, squared.  To calculate your body mass index at this site, insert your weight in pounds and select your height.  Click on the Compute button to see your body mass index.  A BMI of 25 to 29.9 is considered overweight and one 30 or above is considered obese.

NOTE: These values do not apply to athletes and body builders, pregnant and nursing women, frail or elderly persons or persons under 18.

What's the ideal bodyfat percentage?

SORRY! STILL BEING RESEARCHED!

There is still much controversy over what is "ideal" body weight. While some body fat is essential to sustain life, it is generally thought that a healthy bodyfat percentage for males is 8 - 18% and for females is 13 - 21%.

However you should keep in mind that fat is necessary for your health and that the body will become seriously ill if you maintain your bodyfat percentage too low for too long.

BMR-BASAL METABOLIC RATE CALCULATOR

This BMR calculator allows you to estimate your energy needs.

BMR or basal metabolic rate is the energy requirement to maintain life.

It is measured at rest, but not asleep in a thermo-neutral environment in the post-absorptive state.

It can be measured directly or indirectly, or it can be estimated as we are doing here. We are using the equations of Harris & Benedict (1919) to estimate BMR.

To estimate your BMR, input:

Physical characteristics: BMRButtons

Age in years:

Weight in pounds:

Height in inches:

 = cal/day for Men

 = cal/day for Women

BMR can also be estimated as 70 W0.75 = cal/day, where W is body weight in kilograms.

As you know, there is a great deal more to life than just resting in a non-reactive environment.

Your diet must provide enough energy to support your activities above your basal requirements. (Support of bodily functions.)

Once you have calculated your base BMR above, you can enter the MINUTES you spend in your various other activities each day. These activities have been divided into five activity groups from very light to very heavy. Included is a few examples from each category to allow you to gauge where a given activity might fit your life-style.

The result is only an ESTIMATE, but should give you an idea of your daily caloric needs.
